So it’s the height of summer. It’s the Fourth of July, a family reunion, or maybe just a backyard party you want to throw for the neighborhood. The grill is hot, the drinks are cold, and everyone is excited to spend the day together.
But after a while, people start looking around wondering, “What’s next?”
Sure, you can cook up burgers, hot dogs, maybe some chicken wings, and have everyone sit around eating and talking. That’s part of what makes summer gatherings so special. But sooner or later, the conversation slows down, the food is gone, and people begin looking for something fun to do.
You could throw some Pop-Its, light a few smoke bombs, or break out a few sparklers before the fireworks begin. But you and I both know those only last so long.
The last thing you want is Dolores going home and telling her husband how boring your party was.
Thankfully, there’s a simple solution—and you can find it right here at Tarps.com.
Our own Fourth of July celebration was built around one 30’ × 50’ tarp, three kiddie pools, and a little dish soap. With just those few supplies, we created three unforgettable activities that had kids and adults laughing, competing, and making memories all afternoon long.
Event #1: The Giant Tarp Dash
The first game uses the tarp exactly as it comes.
Have four people each grab a corner of the tarp and stand at one end of an open field or large yard. Working together, raise the tarp high into the air and let the wind catch it like a giant parachute.
As soon as the tarp reaches its highest point, everyone else tries to sprint underneath before it floats back down to the ground.
If you’re caught underneath the tarp when it lands, you’re out for that round!
Of course, the fun doesn’t stop there. Simply lift the tarp back up and play again

Want to make it even more exciting? Have the four people holding the tarp chase after the runners. If they manage to trap someone underneath the tarp, that player is out. It’s a surprisingly simple game that quickly turns into a lot of laughter.
Event #2: Slip-and-Slide Kickball
The second event takes just a little preparation, but it’s absolutely worth it.
Take that same 15’ × 30’ tarp and cut it into four equal sections.
Lay the four pieces out in the shape of a kickball diamond. At first base, second base, and third base, place kiddie pools filled with water and a generous amount of dish soap. Leave home plate dry so players have a safe place to kick.
Now soak each tarp section with water and dish soap until it’s nice and slippery.
Congratulations—you’ve just built your own backyard slip-and-slide kickball field.
Every run to first, every stolen base, and every slide into home becomes part of the fun. Before long, you’ll have players laughing as much as they’re competing.

Safety Disclaimer: We recommend sliding across the tarp rather than running. Running on a slippery surface may result in injuries including bruises, scrapes, scratches, sprains, headaches, concussions, or other accidents. Always supervise children and use these activities responsibly.
Event #3: The Ultimate Hill Slide
By now, you’ve probably finished your nine-inning kickball championship.
After a few home runs, a handful of questionable umpire calls, and plenty of friendly arguments, you’ve probably created a few memories you’ll be talking about for years.
Now you may be wondering:
“What do we do with the tarp pieces now?”
Simple.
Take those same tarp sections to a nearby grassy hill. Lay them end-to-end, longways down the slope, and secure them if needed. Then cover them with more dish soap and water.
Just like that, you’ve created an extra-long backyard slip-and-slide that everyone can enjoy.
Sometimes the simplest ideas end up being the most memorable.

Make This Summer One to Remember
With these three activities, you can keep the fun going for hours using just one tarp and a few inexpensive supplies. Whether you’re hosting a Fourth of July cookout, a family reunion, a church picnic, or a neighborhood get-together, these games are guaranteed to fill the day with laughter, friendly competition, and memories that last long after the fireworks are over.
